A Hint of Colour

"In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer." - Albert Camus

The January skies are grey and with only a minimal amount of snow in Southern Ontario, the landscape is slightly beige. Sunshine only seems to appear when the temperature drops significantly, so staying inside the house to keep cozy and warm seems to be the expected

thing to do.

So how does one feel inspired when the colours outside seem so plain?

While in the process of selecting a paint colour for our home, I came across a colour trend for 2019. It was recently announced by Pantone, that the colour of the year is Living Coral.

One can’t help but feel a sense of warmth and comfort thinking about the colour coral. Whether it be for the home or in fashion, the colour coral seems to bring about those happy feelings we long for during the long winter months.

This got me thinking about the word coral – a warm colour of pinkish orange. The coral reefs providing shelter for marine life and protecting coastlines from tropical storms; coral gemstones believed to be a symbol of happiness, wisdom and modesty; and finally the colour coral being used to calm the mind and facilitate emotional healing.

It seems that coral has a special meaning in mythology. A time when Athena turned the beautiful Medusa into a hideous creature, beheaded by Perseus, her blood dripping into the sea forming a healing crystal as beautiful as her former self. Coral represents beauty stemmed from transformation with the final result being immeasurable happiness.

It is truly amazing how colours can have such special meanings and quite often contributing to one’s mood. Consider adding a coral throw pillow to your home, dressing up your outfit with a coral scarf or paint an accent wall coral. You will find this vibrant colour will add that vibrant touch and wash away the winter blues.
